Robust and Efficient One-way MANOVA Tests

چکیده
We propose robust tests as alternatives to the classical Wilks’ Lambda test in one-way MANOVA. The robust tests use highly robust and efficient multi-sample multivariate Sor MM-estimators instead of the empirical covariances. The properties of several robust test statistics are compared. Under the null hypothesis, the distribution of the test statistics is proportional to a chi-square distribution. As an alternative to the asymptotic distribution, we develop a fast robust bootstrap method to estimate the distribution under the null hypothesis. We show when it is asymptotically correct to estimate the null distribution in this way and we use simulations to verify the performance of the bootstrap based tests in finite samples. We also investigate the power of the new tests, as well as their robustness against outliers. Finally, we illustrate the use of these robust test statistics on a real data example. Some additional results are provided as supplemental material.

Robust statistic for the one-way MANOVA
The Wilks’ Lambda Statistic (likelihood ratio test, LRT) is a commonly used tool for inference about the mean vectors of several multivariate normal populations. However, it is well known that the Wilks’ Lambda statistic which is based on the classical normal theory estimates of generalized dispersions, is extremely sensitive to the influence of outliers. A robust multivariate statistic for the...
متن کاملI I Ie I ON A CLASS OF NONPARAMETRIC TESTS FOR MANOVA IN TWO WAY LAYOUTS
I SUMMARY. The object of the present investigation is to propose and study a class I of nonparametric tests for the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) problem relating to complete two way layouts. In this context, the concept of rank-permuta-I I I .-tions for multidimensional interchangeability is developed, and the same is incorporated in the formulation of a class of genuinely distrib...
متن کاملMultivariate Analysis of Variance
We provide an expository presentation of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) for both consumers of research and investigators by capitalizing on its relation to univariate analysis of variance models. We address several questions: (a) Why should one use MANOVA. 9 (b) What is the structure of MANOVA? (C) How are MANOVA test statistics obtained and interpreted? (d) How are MANOVA follow-up...
متن کاملMANOVA method for analyzing repeated measures designs: an extensive primer.
This article teaches the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) method for repeated measures analysis to researchers who are already familiar with regular analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods. Repeated measures designs are traditionally analyzed with mixed-model ANOVAS. However, sphericity violations markedly affect the true Type I error rates and power for the mixed-model tests. However, t...
متن کاملThere is more than one way to skin a G matrix.
Because of its importance in directing evolutionary trajectories, there has been considerable interest in comparing variation among genetic variance-covariance (G) matrices. Numerous statistical approaches have been suggested but no general analysis of the relationship among these methods has previously been published. In this study, we used data from a half-sib experiment and simulations to ex...
